PEXB4016 1024x576 - Prisoner Training & Placements

Hello,

If there is one daily event at LandWorks that is perhaps the most significant of all that we do, then it is lunch.

It all started on our very first day when five of us sat down at a rickety old camping table to eat soup and share a loaf of bread. In some ways nothing much has changed, but yet everything has changed.

Every day we still all gather at 1pm (now often 18 or more) to sit around a huge table (over 6m in length) to…

Eat, chat, gossip, get cross, get funny, laugh, share everything, discuss everything.

Tired, cold, fed up, depressed, shy, exuberant, everything always gets better by being together and sharing food.

First day or last day, it is always a moment to come together and be part of this community, the LandWorks community.

A core belief at LandWorks has been around cooking food and eating together…. A simple statement that is actually quite complex to deliver. Because to learn to cook, ideally you need to take part in/learn so much.

We have plans to develop this offer further, deliver more and make time to do this…

  • Learning about food – as in where it comes from, developing our own bespoke kitchen garden
  • Budgeting skills – we would like to take people at LandWorks shopping at our local supermarket
  • Inspiring people and making them feel able to cook at home
  • Building a set of recipes (a book) that can be used by our guys as a resource
  • Preserving excess produce from our market garden, jams, pickles, and much more
  • Kitchen management, health and safety and hygiene, basic skills

I know what you’re thinking this is starting to sound like a Job Description.

Well, you are right. It is.

We have raised some money to run a two-year pilot scheme. Employing a cook/chef, 3 days a week/5 hours/day. Somebody who can pick this up and develop what is already an essential part of the LandWorks day.

Our volunteer cooks who have already delivered so much and helped develop our communal eating to this point will remain involved, supporting at least one volunteer day/week.

So, if you know of anyone who may be interested, we are about to start advertising this exciting new position at LandWorks
